What E4 Means
Wolf's Induction Cooktop Technical & Service Manual defines E4 as the heat sink under generator 2 passing its temperature limit. Until it cools back below 90C the burners that generator drives stay locked out - so on a four or five zone cooktop you lose a group of zones and keep the rest. The manual's first named cause is a high ambient temperature rather than a problem in the board.
Common Causes of E4
- A high ambient temperature around the appliance, which the manual answers by removing the heat source
- A generator running hotter than it should, checked by verifying the heat sink temperature
- A control board failure, which the manual reaches only after the temperature has been confirmed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Look for heat arriving from somewhere else. A wall oven venting up through the counter, a dishwasher exhausting alongside, or a cooktop installed over a cabinet with no clearance all add heat that the generator then has to shed on top of its own.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Everything named here - the heat sink, the generator, the control board - sits under a bonded glass top above high-current electronics.
- If an adjacent appliance is the heat source, replacing anything inside the cooktop leaves the cause exactly where it was.
- Lifting a glass cooktop out of a stone counter without the right method is how costly tops get chipped.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
