What E20 Means
Each induction burner has a temperature sensor under the glass watching how hot the cooking surface is getting. Wolf's Induction Cooktop Technical & Service Manual defines E20 as that sensor reading shorted on a generator 1 burner and E21 as the same on generator 2, and in both cases the affected burner shuts down. The named repair is the generator board.
Common Causes of E20
- A shorted burner temperature sensor beneath the glass
- A sensor wiring problem reading as a short at the generator board
- A generator board problem in the sensing circuit, which is what the manual names
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Note which zone stopped and whether it had been running hard beforehand. A sensor that fails at high power behaves differently from one that fails cold, and it is a free observation to make.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The sensors sit under the glass against the cooking surface, so reaching one means lifting the cooktop out of the counter.
- That sensor is the cooktop's protection against the glass overheating, so a zone it cannot measure is one the control is right to disable.
- The manual names the generator board as the repair, and ordering the wrong generator - there are up to three - is an expensive misstep.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
