What 04 Means
The opposite failure of the same part. Wolf's DF30 and DF36 Dual Fuel Range Technical & Service Manuals define code 04 as a shorted circuit on the RTD oven sensor - the controller sees almost no resistance where it expects a specific value, which would translate to an impossible cavity temperature. It stops rather than heat from a number it knows is wrong.
Common Causes of 04
- An RTD probe that has shorted inside its own sheath after years in a hot cavity
- Cleaning fluid or moisture tracking across the sensor terminals at the rear of the cavity
- A harness that has chafed through its insulation and is shorting against the range frame
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Cast your mind back over recent baking. A sensor drifting toward a short usually cooks food harder than the dial says for weeks beforehand, and that history is genuinely useful to whoever diagnoses it.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A shorted sensor and a shorted harness are indistinguishable at the controller, so both ends get measured rather than one being assumed.
- Access means moving a gas appliance, which is not something to attempt around a live connection.
- Fitting a sensor without establishing which end shorted leaves the real problem in place and the replacement reading just as wrong.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
