What 03 Means
The RTD is the resistance temperature detector clipped into the back of the oven cavity - the only thing telling the range how hot the oven actually is. Wolf's DF30 and DF36 Dual Fuel Range Technical & Service Manuals define code 03 as an open circuit detected on it: the controller pushes current through the sensor and nothing comes back, electrically the same as the sensor being unplugged.
Common Causes of 03
- An RTD element that has gone open internally, which is ordinary end-of-life behavior after years of heat cycling
- A sensor plug that has backed out of its connector behind the range
- A harness conductor broken where it passes through the cavity insulation
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Note whether the oven refuses to start heating at all or quits part-way through preheat, then leave the oven side alone. The gas burners are ignited independently and are not affected by this sensor.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Reaching the sensor connector means pulling a heavy range out of its opening with a gas line still attached, which is the part that makes this different from a wall oven.
- An open reading cannot tell you whether the break is in the probe, the plug or the wire, and only ohming at both ends settles it.
- RTDs are specified by resistance curve rather than shape, and a lookalike with the wrong curve bakes badly while showing no problem at all.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
