What 4421 Means
Wolf's M Series Troubleshooting Manual logs 4421 when the upper cavity's cooling fan is commanded on and the control detects no current, and 4422 for the lower. Note the priority 2 rating - higher than most not-detected codes - because the cooling fan is what keeps the oven's electronics and the surrounding cabinetry from cooking along with the food.
Common Causes of 4421
- A cooling fan motor that has stopped turning or stalled against a worn bearing
- A break in the wiring between the relay board and the fan
- A blocked air path that has overheated and eventually killed the motor
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Listen at the trim above the door during a bake cycle and for a while afterwards. The cooling fan normally runs on after the oven is switched off, so silence there is a real finding. Also clear anything stored against the oven's vents.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Without the cooling fan, a long bake or a self-clean cycle pushes heat into the control area and the cabinetry, which is a much larger failure than the fan itself.
- Reaching the fan means drawing the built-in oven out of its cabinet, which is neither a one-person job nor a safe one with the circuit live.
- A replacement fan with the wrong airflow rating can clear the detection code while still leaving the electronics under-cooled.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
