What 0731 Means
A triac is the solid-state switch the M Series relay board uses for lower-current loads like the cavity lighting. Wolf's M Series Troubleshooting Manual defines 0731 as the upper oven light triac shorted and 0732 as the lower - the switch has failed conducting, so the control cannot turn the light off.
Common Causes of 0731
- A triac that has failed short, which is the usual failure mode for this type of switch
- A lamp or holder problem that took the triac with it
- A relay board problem on the lighting channel
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Check the obvious version of the sign first: does the cavity light stay on with the door shut? Put your hand near the glass after a few minutes with the oven off - a light that never goes out warms the cavity noticeably.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Halogen cavity lamps run hot and their holders sit in the cavity wall, so the oven gets isolated at the breaker and left to cool before anybody unscrews anything.
- Changing the lamp will not clear a shorted triac, because the problem is in the switch on the board and not in the bulb.
- The lighting channel shares the relay board with the heating circuits, which makes board-level work a job for a technician.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
