What MDL run timeout Means

MDL is the motorised door lock. This message means the control ran the lock motor and the latch did not reach either end of its travel within the allowed time. Wolf's E Series Technical & Service Manual gives it priority 2 and sends the technician to check connections, with the relay module as the follow-up.

Common Causes of MDL run timeout

  • A latch mechanism binding on debris or on a distorted strike so the motor cannot complete its travel
  • A door lock motor that has weakened and no longer drives the mechanism to its stop
  • A connection in the lock circuit that drops out part-way through the run

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

With the oven cold, look at whether the latch bar is sitting part-way out. Note whether you hear the motor running and getting nowhere, or hear nothing at all - those are two different problems and the difference is free to observe.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Let the cavity cool before going near the latch, because this message very often turns up around a self-clean cycle.
  • The lock motor is driven from the relay module on line-adjacent wiring, so testing it means isolating the oven first.
  • A latch pushed back by hand can be left in a position the control never expects, making the next diagnosis harder rather than easier.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

MDL run timeout FAQ

That is the mechanical end of this problem - the motor is being driven but the latch is not moving, which usually means binding rather than a dead motor. Worth mentioning when you book.

It can end up that way if the timeout happened on the locking stroke. Leave it alone rather than forcing it; a technician can release it without damaging the strike.
